How and when to use “Wh-questions”.

 

سوال" يا "سوال لفظ" انگريزي ۾ مخصوص قسم جي معلومات حاصل ڪرڻ لاءِ استعمال ڪيا ويندا آهن.

چيو ويندو اهي .  ”Wh-questions” انهن کي انگريزي ۾

 

اچو ت ڏسون سنڌي ۾ انهن جي ممڪن معني ڪهڙي ٿي سگهي ٿي:

انهن کي ڪيئن استعمال ڪجي :

نوٽ: گھڻن انگريزي سوالن ۾ سوال لفظ  پهرين ايندو آهي، ان کان پوءِ معاون فعل

ايندو اهي.    subject پوءِ موضوع Auxiliary verb (do, did, is, are, have, etc.)

1. How to use "How far"

Meaning: Asks about distance. Structure: How far + do/does/did/is/are/was/were + subject + verb/complement? Examples:

  • How far is the nearest train station? (Asking the distance to the station)
  • How far did you run this morning? (Asking the distance of the run)
  • How far away do you live from your office? (Asking the distance between home and office)

 

2. How to use "How fast"

Meaning: Asks about speed or rate. Structure: How fast + do/does/did/is/are/was/were + subject + verb/complement? Examples:

  • How fast can a cheetah run? (Asking about a cheetah's maximum speed)
  • How fast were you driving when the accident happened? (Asking about the speed of a vehicle)
  • How fast can you type? (Asking about typing speed/rate)

 

3. How to use "How many"

Meaning: Asks about quantity with countable nouns (things you can count individually, like apples, books, people). Structure: How many + plural countable noun + do/does/did/is/are/was/were + subject + verb/complement? Examples:

  • How many books are on the shelf? (Books are countable)
  • How many students passed the exam? (Students are countable)
  • How many siblings do you have? (Siblings are countable)

 

4. How to use "How much"

Meaning: Asks about quantity with uncountable nouns (things you can't count individually, like water, money, time, information) or about price/cost. Structure:

  • How much + uncountable noun + do/does/did/is/are/was/were + subject + verb/complement? (For quantity)
  • How much + is/was/are/were + the item? (For price) Examples:
  • How much water should I drink every day? (Water is uncountable)
  • How much money did you spend? (Money is generally treated as uncountable in this context)
  • How much does this jacket cost? (Asking for the price)
  • How much time do we have left? (Time is uncountable)

 

5. How to use "How old"

Meaning: Asks about age. Structure: How old + is/are/was/were + subject? Examples:

  • How old is your brother? (Asking for his age)
  • How old were you when you learned to drive? (Asking for a past age)
  • How old is this building? (Asking for the age of a thing)

 

6. How to use "How tall"

Meaning: Asks about height. Structure: How tall + is/are/was/were + subject? Examples:

  • How tall are you? (Asking for a person's height)
  • How tall is the Eiffel Tower? (Asking for the height of a structure)
  • How tall does this tree grow? (Asking about the tree's maximum height)

 

7. How to use "What"

Meaning: Asks for information about a thing, idea, action, or state. It is the most general question word. Structure:

  • What + verb? (When 'what' is the subject)
  • What + do/does/did/is/are/was/were + subject + verb/complement? (When 'what' is the object or for other information) Examples:
  • What is your name? (Asking for identification)
  • What are you doing? (Asking about an action)
  • What happened? (Asking for an explanation/event)
  • What time is it? (A common phrase asking for the time)
  • What kind of music do you like? (Asking for a type/category)

 

Note: In most English questions, the question word comes first, followed by the auxiliary verb (do, did, is, are, have, etc.), and then the subject.
