There is and There are.

 

"There is" and "There are" are used to say something exists or is present in a place. They also depend on the numbers — whether you're talking about one thing or more than one.

 

ان وقت استعمال ڪيا ويندا اهن جڏهن   There are” ۽ “There is”

. موجود هوندي اهي  ڪا شئي

(واحد ۾)  هتي اهي   جو مطلب اهي  there is

هتي اهن (جمع ۾) جو مطلب اهي there are

اهو ان تي منحصر اهي ت ڇا توهان هڪ شئي جي باري ۾ ڳالهائي رهيا اهيو يا

.هڪ کان زياده شين جي باري ۾

WHEN TO USE

Use there is:

  • When talking about one thing.
  • Sometimes also used with uncountable nouns (e.g. water, music, money).

Examples:

  • There is a cat in the garden.
  • There is some water in the glass.
  • There is a problem we need to solve.

 

Use there are:

  • When talking about more than one thing (plural countable nouns).

Examples:

  • There are five apples on the table.
  • There are many people in the room.
  • There are books on every shelf.

 

SPECIAL NOTE: Uncountable nouns

Use "there is" with things you can’t count individually:

  • There is sugar in the jar.
  • There is traffic on the road.
  • There is a lot of noise outside.

Even though "sugar" or "traffic" might seem like "plural", they are treated as singular.

 

Questions & Negatives

Questions:

  • Is there a bathroom here?
  • Are there any cookies left?

Negatives:

  • There isn’t any milk.

  • There aren’t any students in the class.
